Paintings from Jewish Collections at the National Gallery in Prague II. Identified Owners

The second volume of the publication devoted to the provenance of paintings in the National Gallery in Prague presents not only the paintings themselves but also their original owners, identified through research. The book, entitled Paintings from Jewish Collections in the National Gallery in Prague II. Identified Owners completes the set with the previously published study, Paintings from Jewish Collections in the National Gallery in Prague I. Unidentified Owners.

Both publications are the result of many years of systematic research not only in the institution’s own collections, but also in domestic and foreign archives, memory institutions, and research libraries. Using archival sources, both volumes, comprising more than 798 pages, describe in detail the provenance of 264 paintings from the estates of their original, primarily Jewish, owners. The second volume also recounts the fates of 48 collectors. The text is accompanied by full-page reproductions of individual works of art and available portraits of the people who originally owned the paintings, as well as expert commentary on the sources used.
